  • Cake: 1 box (about 15 oz/425 g) vanilla or chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients as per box: eggs, oil, water) OR 1 homemade 9-inch cake, fully cooled
  • Frosting: 1/2 cup (120 g) cream cheese frosting or buttercream frosting
  • Coating & Decoration:
  • 12 oz (340 g) candy melts in school colors (or white chocolate + colored food coloring)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable shortening (optional, for thinning chocolate)
  • Sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored sugar in coordinating colors
  • 24 lollipop sticks
  • 1/4 cup (25 g) mini chocolate chips (for tassels or accents)
  • Fondant in school colors (optional, for cap decorations)

Instructions

1.
Bake the cake according to package or recipe instructions. Allow to cool completely.
2.
Crumble the cooled cake into fine crumbs in a large bowl.
3.
Add frosting, mixing with a spatula or clean hands, until the mixture holds together when pressed (you may not need all the frosting).
4.
Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions and roll into 24 even balls.
5.
Place the balls on a lined baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or freeze for 20 minutes.

Dip each cake pop fully into the melted coating, gently tapping off excess.
9.
While still wet, decorate with sprinkles and colored sugar. For graduation caps, press a fondant square on top and attach a mini chocolate chip with a dab of melted chocolate for the tassel.
10.
Stand pops upright in a styrofoam block or cake pop stand to set. Let coating harden completely before serving.

What You’ll Need

Cake Base

01 1 box (15 oz) vanilla or chocolate cake mix, plus required eggs, oil, and water per package instructions, or 1 homemade 9-inch cake, fully cooled

Binding Frosting

01 1/2 cup cream cheese frosting or buttercream frosting

Coating & Decoration

01 12 oz candy melts in desired school colors or white chocolate with food coloring
02 2 tablespoons vegetable shortening, optional, for thinning chocolate
03 Sprinkles, edible glitter, or colored sugar in coordinating colors
04 24 lollipop sticks
05 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips for decorative tassels or accents
06 Fondant in school colors, optional, for cap decorations

How-To Steps

Step 01

Prepare Cake Base: Bake cake according to package or recipe instructions. Allow to cool fully before proceeding.

Step 02

Crumble Cake: Break cooled cake into fine crumbs using hands or a mixer in a large mixing bowl.

Step 03

Incorporate Frosting: Add frosting gradually, mixing thoroughly until the mixture holds together when pressed. Use only enough to achieve a moldable consistency.

Step 04

Shape Cake Balls: Portion tablespoon-sized amounts and roll into 24 evenly sized balls by hand for uniformity.

Step 05

Chill Cake Balls: Arrange balls on a lined baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or freeze for 20 minutes to set.

Step 06

Melt Chocolate Coating: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt candy melts or chocolate in 30-second increments, stirring between each, until smooth. Add vegetable shortening as needed for desired dipping consistency.

Step 07

Insert Sticks: Dip the tip of each lollipop stick into melted chocolate and insert halfway into each chilled cake ball. This secures the stick and prevents slipping.

Step 08

Dip and Coat Cake Pops: Fully submerge each cake pop in melted coating, lifting and tapping gently to remove excess. Work efficiently for smooth coverage.

Step 09

Add Decorative Toppings: While coating is wet, immediately decorate with sprinkles, colored sugar, or edible glitter. For graduation caps, affix a fondant square atop each pop and attach a mini chocolate chip as a tassel using a dab of melted chocolate.

Step 10

Set and Serve: Stand coated cake pops upright in a styrofoam block or cake pop stand. Allow coating to harden completely before serving or packaging.
